The home is often portrayed as somehow separate from the wider world. Yet the home was always a permeable space, penetrated by visitors (both long and short-term, from lodgers to dinner guests), servants, trades people and thieves.
This conference will focus on the interfaces between the home and the world beyond the "front door": the range of people who came and went; the ways in which properties and activities were structured to receive, segregate or repel visitors; the ideas of hospitality, commensality and sociability shaping domestic accessibility; and the (re)imaginings of home and domestic conduct that accompanied these processes.
Keynote speakers: Carolyn Steedman & Amanda Vickery.
Proposals: including a title and abstract of c.300 words, should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
