We are organising a two-day conference "Navigating the Text: Textual Articulation and Division Across Cultures" that will be held on 3-4 May 2019 at Merton College and The Queen's College, Oxford. We expect to invite 12-15 specialists working on different manuscript and epigraphic traditions from Northern Africa, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Near East, South Asia, East Asia and Mesoamerica. Each participant will present a case study focusing on an image of a specific material text (epigraphic or manuscript) and discuss the different aspects of structuring employed in it, paying close attention to how different units within the text are marked by the use of (for example) borders, frames, titles and sub-titles, space, colour, variants of script, punctuation, etc.

If you have any questions, please contact Yegor Grebnev (
