We have two themes for the 2018 Symposium: “Strategic Communications: Historical lessons for maximising impact & signalling intent.” and “Technology in Warfare: What makes a difference?”

For almost 30 years, MoD and Dstl have used analysis of historical campaigns and developments in academic understanding of conflict to provide a ‘reality-check’ to UK defence policy. The aim of this symposium is to bring together analysts, military  historians and policy makers to discuss the use of historical lessons to understand topical and enduring defence and security issues.

Possible Topics for Discussion:

  • Winning the narrative
  • Strategic Communications within a Full Spectrum Approach
  • Historical approaches to strategic messaging.
  • Implications of the rapid development of technologies in warfare
  • Lessons from history on technological advantage
  • Off-the-shelf vs. bespoke technology

Do not feel constrained by the topics mentioned above. We are bringing together  interested parties from diverse backgrounds and submissions are encouraged in all areas related to defence and security where real world analysis, historical or contemporary, can add value. Any interesting papers will be included in the programme regardless of the theme.

There is no fee for participation, but unfortunately we cannot subsidise travel or expenses. Food and refreshments will be provided.

The symposium will allow for 45 minute presentation slots to encourage active  discussion of the topics covered. Contributions will be accepted on the basis of a 200-300 word abstract.

Abstracts and registration requests, as well as all administrative queries, should be sent by e-mail to: Oliver Hooker (

The deadline for abstract submission is 23rd April 2018
Authors will be advised of acceptance by 27th April 2018
The deadline for registration is 15th June 2018

Non UK Nationals are advised to contact us sooner

We regret we cannot accept protectively marked presentations. Due to the location of the symposium, it will be necessary for all attendees to provide some personal information for security purposes. This will be collected closer to the event.
