War changes not only political and geographical realities, it also changes language in general, and the use of words and images in particular within their specific semiotic and semantic dimensions. Propaganda in particular redefines the use of images and language within the cultural settings to provide a narrative that supports the war effort as such. Consequently, every war is demanding its own visual and “translated“narrative to successfully engage with its supporters in general, and soldiers in particular. These narratives allow new classifications of a just war, the creation of acceptance of specific victimologies, and also racist or imperialist preconditioning of soldiers and war supporters in a broader sense.

The aim of a two day conference at Nord Universitet, Norway is to discuss the interrelationship between war, semiotics, and semantics in a broader perspective - global and comparative approaches are as welcome as proposals dealing with any period in history. The organizers have a particular interest in, but do not limit proposals to, the following topics:

*semiotic and semantic narratives of

-     the bellum iustum

-     the enemy

-     the victims of war

*semiotic and semantic memories of

-     guilt

-     violence

-     war trauma

*semiotic and semantic forms of propaganda

*political semiotics and semantics in war

Interested scholars and PhD students should send a short proposal (max. 300 words) and a one page CV to; and  until April 30, 2018.
