“An Emporium for many Nations”: London shaped by trade.

Since its founding, London has been at the centre of national and international trade. From Londinium to Lundenwic (Bede's 'Emporium for many Nations') and Lundeburh through to the present day, the city has endured as a marketplace in which the world’s business and commerce has taken place or passed through. Imports and exports, goods and people, large and small, legal and illegal, by land, sea and air, here to stay or just passing through; trade has unquestionably shaped London, its hinterlands, and those who have dwelt here.

The aim of this one-day conference is to investigate and explore the history of ‘trade’ in Greater London, in all its various forms, and across different periods in history.

The LAMAS Local History Conference attracts a keen ‘general interest’ audience as well as many members of local history societies from across London and its surrounding counties who have more specialised interests.
