Keynote Speaker: Professor Rebecca Earle, University of Warwick

This conference invites scholars working from sixteenth to twentieth century Latin American history to think about different ways to approach ideas on the body in the region. This conference aims to understand the body as an active subject within history, one that is connected through ideas, representations and behaviours. This exercise will invite scholars to rethink the way we conceptualise and reflect on the body in our research.

We welcome abstracts of up to 250 words for 15-20 minute papers on ideas of the body in Latin America from the perspective of, but not restricted to:

  • History of ideas
  • History of emotions and affect theory
  • Gender
  • Race
  • History of medicine
  • Social history
  • Political thought
  • Cultural history
  • Visual culture

Please send abstracts and a brief biography to Dr. Camila Gatica Mizala at by 1st of March 2018. Candidates will be informed of acceptance by 15th March.
