In collaboration with the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies at the University of Warwick, the Centre for Postcolonial Studies hosts this two-day international conference at Senate House in London to mark the centenary of the abolition of indenture in the British Empire. The conference will include presentations from both new and established scholars and feature the latest research on indentureship and its legacies. We are delighted to feature a joint keynote, delivered by three outstanding early career researchers: Dr Reshaad Durgahee, Gitanjali Pyndiah and Dr Kavyta Raghunandan.
The conference will also incorporate two significant evening events. The first of these is the University of Warwick’s inaugural Gafoor Lecture in Indentureship Studies (Friday 6 October). This will be delivered by renowned indenture scholar Prof. Brinsley Samaroo of the University of the West Indies. The second is a literary panel, co-curated with the Commonwealth Writers organisation (Saturday 7 October). This panel features readings by authors Ananda Devi (Mauritius), Gaiutra Bahadur (Guyana), Lakshmi Persuad (Trinidad), Mary Rokanadravu (Fiji) and Agnes Sam (South Africa). Our guest speakers include Grace Anezia Ali, Prof. David Dabydeen, Dr Nalini Mohabir, Dr Atreyee Phukan and Dr Anna Schultz.
