Keynote Speaker: Professor Rosamond McKitterick FRHistS, FRSA (University of Cambridge), and her topic will be 'Europe in the early middle age: continuities and new beginnings'.
Europe is at the epicentre of current debates. Financial and migrant crises, the rise of populism and external threats of terrorism are issues which are of increasing intensity. As the United Kingdom is currently considering its position within the European Union and the form of its relationship with the institution and the continent, and ahead of a historic referendum on Britain's membership of the EU, extensive discussion has been generated surrounding the ideals that this part of the world represents. It is necessary to reflect and discuss Europe as both a political, social, cultural and economic entity and as a number of separate entities, microscopically assessing and comparing ideals, themes, places, individuals and concepts that played a role in a formative period for 'Europe': the Middle Ages.
With these issues in mind, this symposium will explore medieval Europe and Britain with an extensive and wide-ranging approach, inviting researchers to present on diverse and differing topics and places, covering the British Isles, Western and Central Europe, the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and Scandanavia between c.500 and c.1500.
We welcome contributions from postgraduate students of all University of London institutions and departments. Email Lee.Dickson.firstname.lastname@example.org or Robin.Shields.email@example.com with any questions.
