The Art of Exploration and Encounter

September 25, 2014, 11:00am BST - 1:00pm
National Maritime Museum

Lecture Hall
London SE10 9NF
United Kingdom

Topic areas

In an era before photography, the details of European voyages of exploration were recorded by expedition artists. But as well as making scientific records, these artists played a key role in representing the places, climates, people and customs encountered on these expeditions. This lecture will consider what the art of exploration can tell us about British attitudes to the wider world in this period.

With Profesor John MacAleer, University of Southampton.
