Newman University, Birmingham, in collaboration with Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Library, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Journal of Liberal History invites proposals for papers for an international conference to assess the career of Joseph Chamberlain, mayor of Birmingham, Colonial Secretary and leader of the Liberal Unionist Party and Tariff Reform Association.

The conference is to be held over 2 days at Newman University and the new Birmingham Central Library on 4-5 July 2014 to mark the centenary of Chamberlain’s death on 2 July 1914.

The conference organisers invite participation by scholars in all aspects of Chamberlain’s career and context such as the sanitary campaign in Birmingham, the concept of the 'Civic Gospel', Chamberlain and the Union with Ireland, Chamberlain's non-conformist identity, Chamberlain and Gladstone, Chamberlain's concept of Empire or the political culture of the Tariff Reform campaign.

Proposals may consist of individual papers or of papers grouped for a session. For session proposals, two, or preferably, three papers should relate to a common theme, not necessarily bound by a chronological framework.
